Here’s a sample from an interview I did a few months ago with Dr. Brenna Clark Gray. And here’s my main questions for people: are there too many sound effects? I feel like I learned to put in sound effects and then went a little nuts putting them in everywhere, and I’m now reconsidering that and thinking maybe less is more? Let me know if these are distracting.
Your sound effects are cute – was Brenna’s giggle edited in too? The giggle is part of what I love about her podcasts and interviews. For my personal taste, the typing was effective where it came in, and then it became somewhat distracting when it continued underneath the speaking for more than a few seconds. The ton of bricks crashing down fit perfectly as a conclusion. Here I would have enjoyed a longer fade-out.
Thank you! I thought maybe the typing was going on too long, but wasn’t sure. I think I’ve been leaning in to the sound effects a bit too much with the assumption that it would help hold attention. But I should just trust that the conversation is enough (especially when I have a guest like Brenna!), and use sound-effects more sparingly.
I think it’s like, when you learn something new you want to use it everywhere! The next step is not just knowing how to do something, but knowing WHEN to do it. And I’m still working on that!!
You made me sound very smart and thus I found it unpersuasive.
Mostly kidding. I really love the coronavirus voice, and I agree the typing is maybe a bit long but it also feels as frantic as I felt…
Please keep the bricks.
Thanks Brenna! (Also, I really didn’t edit your voice that much, so maybe you just do sound smart. . . I dunno. . . just a theory!)
Yeah, I thought the typing did convey a level of frantic energy, but also worried that it might be distracting to a listener. Finding the balance with sound effects and audio in general is something I’m struggling with at the moment.
