Andraste’s Gadfly

Audio Experiments:

This audio is an attempt to make a little preview or trailer for a podcast project I’ve been slowly working on with a friend of mine. This is way more layering of audio than I’ve done in the past, but I think it turned out reasonably well for someone who just started playing with this a few months ago. Of course there is room for improvement, and I’m not sure I’m using all of Audacity’s tools correctly, but this was really fun!

Edit: realizing now that perhaps I should have used this exercise as an opportunity to draft up something for my more academic and more structured Winter 2022 podcast project. . . oh well! Too late now!!

Transcript:

Jill Narration: Hi,  welcome to Andraste’s Gadfly, a podcast about the Bioware Dragon Age Games and Philosophy. In this podcast we  apply Philosophical Theories to the games we love.

Jill: How we philosophically think about moral dilemmas.

Kira: You’re faced with a decision where it is not abundantly clear what the right answer is.

Jill: So we have sex-negative and sex-positive feminism

Kira: And what that says about how romance, and sexual desire intermingle.

Jill Narration: And we have a lot of fun doing it.

Jill: So you’re kind of role playing yourself

Kira: I kind of am

Kira; Chi chival. .  love in the chivalry times? That didn’t come out any better. How do you pronounce that?

Jill: Yes, chivalry interpretations of love.

Jill: they are such great characters

Kira: They’re such great characters!

Jill Narration: So, if you like Dragon Age and you like Philosophical thinking,  Why not join us? We release episodes four times a year. . . probably.

Jill: Are we too overworked to commit to four times a year?

Kira: I think at least four.

Jill: Uh oh it’s on record now

Jill Narration: Hey look, no one is paying us to do this. It is a total labor of love. So, subscribe, and drop us a comment. You can find us on Twitter at @AndrastesGadfly, or email us at AndrastesGadfly at gmail dot com. And find us wherever you get your podcasts. Except ITunes. I cannot figure out Itunes. Can someone please help me with Itunes? Chat soon. Bye!!

  1. Same with the iTunes comment! Not very user friendly. This project sounds really cool. In the garage band tutorial I was working with the host talked about how to record with two people and said ideally the people are in the same room. Is that how you did this? Thanks!

    1. Hi Karen. No, I used Zencastr in order to capture my and my colleague Kira’s audio at the same time, and then I downloaded our files into Audacity for editing. Given the pandemic Kira and I haven’t been in the same room together since February 2020, lol.

The audio clips where we are chatting here are taken from the first two episodes of our podcast that we made (it took us 6 months to make two episodes, so we are not fast)!

  2. Loved the conversational tone of this trailer. Thank you for the Zencastr tip. I’m using Zoom, but really struggling with finding a way to edit the conversations separately.

  3. This sounds so good. There is something really energizing about the sound of laughter. Just that couple of seconds you include lifted my mood and created a great atmosphere for me to want to listen longer.
